Policy for Adding Students to TCS 191

Dr. Andy’s Policy for Adding Students to TCS 191

TCS 191 meets in the Art Annex, often called the TCS Building. Because the class is typically held only one quarter a year, the class is often over-impacted, especially in the first week of the quarter before students realize the significant workload expected from class participants.

TCS 191 has a cap of 25 students, though I can add up to four additional spots to students who have laptops and who would be willing to sit in available chairs on the perimeter of our classroom. When I add extra students, I am not assigned teaching assistants; rather, I take on the extra work (called “overload”) because of my commitment to students who are willing to work hard in my classes.

Priority for spots in TCS 191 will be assigned as follows:

  • First priority is given to graduating (declared) TCS / CaTS majors who need the class to meet their graduation requirements;
  • Second priority goes to all other (declared) TCS majors;
  • Third priority goes to students who have declared the writing minor;
  • Fourth priority goes to seniors who plan to graduate in 2014;
  • Fifth priority goes to students with relevant majors, such as Art Studio, Music, Design, etc.

In addition to bringing a laptop to class, I expect that all students added as an overload to attend every class (that is, to skip no classes) and to participate enthusiastically. If you are unwilling to meet these expectations and contribute to the class meaningfully, please let another student claim one of the overload spots.
